(Dave and Todd in the Dark Matter studio)
1. if you guys are recording 3 songs, we assume “another soulmate” and “broken people”, what is the third song? and have you recorded these for release or just for demo?
Actually we are looking into recording Another Soulmate and a song called Ultimate Reason before we leave for Europe. If time permits we may try do get a few more in, including Broken people. The goal is to get some finished songs ready for release as we pretty much already demo stuff as we go in the rehearsal space.
2. when writing songs now, do you ever think or even say “this is a good song, but it’s not ‘jane’s addiction’ good” and scrap it?
Sure. We basically keep moving forward with song ideas and the ones we collectively gravitate towards are the ones that get the most focus. Sometimes ideas will get scraped or saved away for other projects, depending on the idea.
3. When will we see an official LIVE Jane’s DVD (Full live show)?
I am fairly certain that our Halloween Voodoo Fest show is on it’s way to being made available on DVD.
4. are you guys considering bob ezrin again as producer? have you talked about a producer?
No, we aren’t working with Bob again. We have thrown some names around and will be closer to a decision after we get a chance to record some material in the coming week.
5. which guitars do you still own from the old jane’s addiction days? i think i’ve heard you mention the “nothing’s shocking” guitar and i’m pretty sure i’ve seen the “black les paul” in some pics, any others?
Hmmm… There may be a few in storage but for the most part, many have either been stolen, given away to friends or sold off during the dark times. The NS guitar is definitely around somewhere as is the original Les Paul. The gold top Tele was destroyed on stage, I believe, and the pieces were given to photographer Chris Cuffaro who then gave it to someone else years later. I think I recall it being sold online at one point? I’m not sure. Most of the RHCP Strats were stolen at one point and I think that others may still even be in their storage space! HAHA…
6. You made a comment on Dark Matter about love making and sex. You said you wouldn’t know what making love is? Is that really true? Didn’t you ever feel something inside of you that made you realize this is more then sex? I have difficulty understanding how men and women can just have sex. I need to have passion and some sort of feeling to be able to have sex.
* Do you feel that women use you? I get a bitter vibe from you about that. Not putting you down. I feel you put a wall up because you really want to be loved for who you are inside. I sense you are a good guy and have pain. I relate to you.
* Am I talking to myself on Twitter? I joined for those tix. I’m hurt that you never talk to me. I don’t care for Twitter. I’ll stay with it for a while, but I would like to communicate a bit with you.
um… WOW… It’s a “radio show” hun. It’s supposed to be light, sarcastic, funny and over the top. As much as I seem open and communicative, I do not get into my private and personal affairs in certain areas. I appreciate the “analysis” but you are analyzing a personality on the radio… Not me. As for Twitter? What can I say? I have 58,000+ people tweeting everyday. Really, no need to be “hurt”. You wouldn’t want us to start analyzing you now… Would you?
7. Aaaages ago I was watching the Three Days DVD and Not For Nothing came on in the background, only it was a beautiful acoustic version that has stuck in my mind for so long…. and I was wondering… where can I find it?
God, I really don’t know. I’m sure it’s floating around the Internet somewhere but I have lost track of all those old recordings. That was the version I did with Chad Smith on drums. I played bass and guitar.

”
So… maybe some advices?? how many hours did u play??
Dear Dave not meaing to analyse but i really feel beneath your “shell” you are a reptile.
Hey I was just wondering why let’s make evil, the b-side recorded with the peppers was not released on One Hot Minute… Come on it’s like the best song the chili peppers have made! It was like going further into a new sound! I love your guitar work on it!
Which was more fun, playing with Billy Corgan or the Chili Peppers?
When the Grateful Dead descended on Egypt’s Nile Valley in 1978 to perform 3 landmark concerts at the foot of the Great Pyramid in Giza, legendary promoter Bill Graham called it, “one of the greatest experiences of my life.” Counterculture icon and author Ken Kesey described it as “the latest Rocking of the Cradle of Civilization.” The day after the last of the trio of shows, which took place during a rare lunar eclipse, the Egypt-Israeli Peace Treaty was signed. The mysterious and sacred properties of the Pyramids of Gizah that preserved the Egyptian Kings for eons provided a vortex through which the ancient messages and infinite wisdom of distant sages could be transmitted through the sympathetic vibrations of the Grateful Dead.
Dave, do you feel that the current material Janes is writing will be more funk/party oriented or will it be on the side of serious business!?
You need to address the reptile question. Is that really true?
Is that you Courtney Love?
Dave isn’t a reptile you idiots. “Trust no one” sums it up. You can’t put faith and trust in anyone other than yourself because people will use you for their own selfish ends and then betray you. If it hasn’t happened to you yet don’t worry it will.
a reptile no he’s way too hot to be cold blooded…he’s on fire like the messiah…he’s an evolved human being he levitates he meditates he gravitates he’s not your average joe blow on the blow…HE’S AN artistE who makes audio slaves of us:)ALL… he’s not a snake although that kitchen bench of his designed by heidi looked like faux snakeskin didn’t slash have the snakes wasn’t he the one with the petsnakes he got rid of them i think when he had kids in case one of the snakes swallowed his baby that’s what i heard …so no sorry no reptiles allowed…no using anybody either karma will get you in a crocodile deathroll before you benefit from exploiting others damn bet your fuckin arse on that:)sweeties ha

Wow. There is some freaky s**t posted on this site!
Jane’s Addiction
I heard you will be in the studio tonite. Good. Here is what we are looking for, I’m going to spell it out for you:
a song with the tribalist tom tom rhythms similar to ‘Chip Away/Kettle Whistle’ combined with Perry’s exact hippy-ish singing style of ‘Trip Away/My Time’ combined with Joy Divisionesque bass guitar and Dave you know how to fill in the rest: dark, exotic, moody textural guitar of the Robert Smith/Daniel Ash school.
i don’t take any meds no pills no vicodin no xanax ha i’m reading nicole richie’;s novel first time i’ve even heard of xanax see her with djam who overdosed last year…she was skinny skanky fucked up in the head till she got with joel straightened out had a baby mmmm and vicodin dave mentioned in a tweet presuming it is a prescription he used… and god no i’m not courtney love…i’m no fucked up ex junkie who cranks heroin intravenous into my synapses i went to uni we studied heroin abusers nervous systems that heroin lodges in synaptic gaps and does irreparable damage they say 7 years every cell is renewed not nerve tissue so fuck heroin users and that’s most bands from the 90s ha……just watched kelly osbourne on dr phil with the attorney general talk about prescription drugs killing michael jackson, corey haimey lost boys guy and anna nicole smith and kelly is now collaborating with dr phil to try to get parents to search their kids rooms suss their drug intake out ha is it live and let live or live and let die what should it be dave navarro???the guns and roses saga of drug addiction we all know duff and slash and axl were on it and kurt cobain shot himself twice in the stomach presumably because of a drug induced manic episode of depression and then courtney who herself was in a constant state of heroin confusion tucks his ashes into a teddybear writes a strange song about aching like doll parts loses francis bean at an awards show she had difficulty coming to terms with the results of what she considered a great drug at the time… i’m an extremely mindful parent i don’t have a medicine cabinet because if you have pills in the house it encourages teens to think pills are an avenue for help when there are herbal remedies such as valerian skullcap willowbark that are less harmful to ease pain and won’t encourage an addictive personality to overdose john trravolta’s son was probably a prescription overdose like anna nicole smith’s son they try to save face and cover up the shame of having lil drug fucks but that is all it is and there would no dance clubs without ecstasy in the new millenium eccies are driving the economy and record producing companies and ministry of sound is actually the ministry of lil pills…millions take them not just thousands of kids millions heroin is old school and prescription cocktails are for geeks seriously ”are you on your meds”jesus it’s like clinical trial testing of guinea pigs you wouldn’t encourage people to take meds would you unless you wre extremely uneducated and being negligent.. i have been to visit people who got big shots of largactil in their ass in a solitary cell in psychiatric institutions don’t fuck with your brain chemistry that fluid needs to stay pretty pure to cope with everything once the medical establishment start defining and refining you with their drugs you lose it quite quickly…it’s one flew over the cuckoo’s nest and who really wants that lobotomy;)ha
I lyke phreaky shit. Sugarbabe U got any Ketamine?
Hi Dave,
How does the “sound” (the theme?) of a Jane’s Addiction song/album come about? Strays is kinda Glam Rocky while the 2 songs on the NINJA sampler were v gothic sounding. I also note one of the mag article links describe a “70s UK punk” sound with Duff. Does it start with the bassist? Is it an organic process that unfolds, starting from the input of the individual members, or is there a “Lets sound like Bowie ’73/Motorhead ’79 on this album” decision by one/all the members ?
This blog seesm to be returning to where it belongs – full of wierd ass shit in the comments…. Enjoying….
What do you think about the whole LOST ending? Disappointing or Suprised? x
I know there are artists who have been friends for years and collaborate on different projects. Have you ever been asked or wanted to jam with Josh Homme on any of his Desert Sessions projects?
special k…no sorry got none…what do you think bout jessica simpson working with billy corgan was that like a pop collaboration you saw coming should nick lachey work with chrissie hyndes…who in the pop genre would you really love to work with if you had a choice of anyone male or female who would you accompany…on your les paul or prs or your ibanez do tell the glee crew i really could see you on glee dave:) hehe evil laugh:)
you and lady ga ga would be so HOT 2 getha i mean that ditch perry and perks seeya boys ha collab with her puhleese!
Dave, Are you a perfectionist in the studio or do you prefer to knock it off in 1 or two takes? And Perry, did you enjoy felating Tom Morello’s 3″ sausage?
jessica simpson dating billy corgan? i call that a freak show
A long and badly explained question(sorry), but I hope you read this since I am a true fan:-)
First of all, I`d like to say that Jane`s Addiction is one of my top three favourite bands of all time, and a band that in many ways changed my life and my perspective about what music was when I was about 13-14 years old. I grew up in Norway where, at that time, it was kind of hard to get to see bands like you live very often.
So, when I was 27 years old you toured and visited Oslo and it was probably the best concert I have ever been to. I remember standing just in front of the stage, and I think(at least) you recognized me, because you had been playing at a record store a couple of hours before that and I stood just in front of you. Great evening and I got Perkins drumstick.
Anyway-a part of what made Jane`s different to me, and to be fair kind of mythical compared to other bands, was that I perceived you as very “rock n`roll” at a time where not that many bands were that. A band that didn`t follow rules for how music was supposed to be made. And also you seemed kind of arty and non-commercial and fucked up, which was fascinating and something that I often feel makes music more “dangerous” and interesting. Definetely very fascinating for a teen, when I discovered you.
So my question is: 1.Do you feel that your approach to making music now has somewhat changed? Do you feel that the commercial aspect is something that you put more into your concideration when you make music now compared to when you released the early albums? Do you ever feel you compromise the arty part of the music for the sake of, perhaps getting a broader audience and a more commerical sound? Because the times have changed, the music industry and so on?
I know you have said that it will always be easy for people to be critical of the “new stuff” because of the past, and that it would be impossible to “recreate” that..you have changed and so on….naturally I agree.
And/but also: 2. In general- When I think about some bands who have long careers behind them and are established, do you think that it is also correct that some of them have kind of a lighter approach to how “serious” they take their music now, perhaps because they`re happier and healthier doing so? And if so does the music lack a certain damaged quality because of it?
I am a big Smashing Pumpkins and Corgan-fan, and I read in an interview that when he wrote Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie(two of my favourite records) he was so intense in the recordingprocess that he thought every song had to move mountains.Otherwise they would not be good enough. I gathered that at some point he thought, this was not healthy for him and perhaps also a result of other issues that he had , and he seems more laidback towards that now.
3. And at last: In your opinion. do you feel that Jane`s Addiction pr 2010 can still make new records that will be groundbreaking/ classics? Or is that kind of not something that goes through your mind?
Thank you:-)
.
very nice…thanks
Hey SugarBabe,
Can you squirt?
If so do you want to go on a date?
Hey Dave go on a date with sugarbabe see if you can change her mind on love, life, and everything in between.
See comments on here are still as mad as eva. don’t know what all the excitement is about heroin sugababe, ur just adding to all the drama. Nothing exciting about heroin….instead of having those posters saying “heroin fucks you up,” which sadly but fact, may still appeal to the natural desires to take risks of youth, instead just have some guy passed in his tracksuit bottoms, and the caption.. “Heroin is really boooooooring.” Yawn.
P.S. no offence meant to those fighting to overcome addiction and their families. May you move forward to have an interesting and happy healthy life once more. x
I find sugababes comments a bit silly, when you think that hope of a normal life once more is an important motivator for giving up, however, i suppose this is a rock star blog not a community health centre. I think one can safely assume from the above that she is not working in one. Of course i have never left silly comments myself in the past. No. Not about reptiles, no. okay, but i am sending in evidence of Dave Navarro’s reptilian consciousness (Slitty pupils always a giveaway) to David Icke. Yes.
Thank you my good boy, I shall review these evidences as soon as I get them. Good day
Sorry, Dave i was behind on listenign to Dark Matter podcasts. I just heard your reports on Human Centipede and the “Hammer” video. Sorry for posting a question that you’d already answered! Keep up the awesome entertainment!
Dave have you considered setting up a camera in studio of dark matter? It would be interesting to get the video of you guys doing the show in studio.
Dave, Q on the difference between Strats and the PRS playing live; do they lend for different styles for you?
What’s up with the lack of Boss pedals so far?
Thanks.
Dave,
I understand that you really dig your Billy Corgan custom strat. I really want one, but no music store around here carries it for me to “test drive” it before I buy. As a guitar player, can you let me/us know what kind of axe it is to you?
Thanks!
Dave first off thank you for writing the song Slow motion Sicknees, I’m in love with this Girl and Wanna Be with her and we dated before and Want me to have a top on the line life with a career and planning for a family and that life, How do I get her to trust me on all that? Thanks D
