Tonight on Dark Matter Todd and I thought it would be fun to play all the singer/songwriter depressing songs from the 70′s that we kind of grew up hearing all the time. These are songs that were hits in a way as they were played all over the place. One couldn’t help but be familiar with them even if they didn’t know the name of the artists or owned the records. There is a certain kind of melancholy for us in these tracks that may or may not translate to the younger generation. I suppose we shall see. Perhaps it was the fact that these songs were big as we were coming of age, but after reviewing them recently, I was struck by the power of musicianship within and skillful story telling and songwriting that went into these songs. I am fairly certain that none of the tracks in tonight’s playlist have ever been played on Indie and I am just as certain that they will never be played on Indie again.

Jane’s just got back from New Orleans after playing the Voodoo Festival on Halloween. It was truly a magical experience in a way I didn’t expect. Almost immediately after landing I was filled with the magic of the city and the spirit of Halloween, a holiday I usually try to avoid. Don’t get me wrong, I love the celebration of the horror and the overall visual decor, but over the years, especially in L.A., Halloween has turned into a night where many people just get as fucked up as they can and become pretty irritating! I expected The French Quarter to be the Power Point of convergence for these people but as it turns out, as it often does, I was wrong. The LA celebration of Halloween is much better than the L.A. celebration of Halloween! We had costumed audience members join us on stage for Jane Says at the end of our set and we all had a spectacular time. After the show, I retreated to my room and watched ORPHAN and Drag Me To Hell. ORPHAN was surprisingly great and Drag Me To Hell was simply fun! Incidentally, someone in my hotel lobby said to me, “Great costume! You look JUST like him!” HAHA. Finally, a night that I can “blend in” with the crowd. Super good time.

A real Dave Navarro Costume:

Tomorrow we leave for BRAZIL. I’ll check back in soon!

“Almost immediately after landing I was filled with the magic of the city…”

pretty much.

CherryTeresa November 4, 2009 at 11:55 am

I love that they thought you were in a costume but it was actually you.

Bella Blue November 4, 2009 at 11:57 am

I performed at Voodoo as well…this was my 3rd year and you guys chose an AMAZING year to come down and perform. The energy in the city was definitely something magical and “other worldly.”

Thanks for visiting my city that I love so much. Glad to know you loved it too:)

Interesting how the experience of Halloween (or any holiday for that matter) can differ so much from city to city, or country to country!

MissWhiteMoth November 4, 2009 at 12:00 pm

‘super good time’ : that’s all that matters in the end ;)

Great photo.

Been downloading stuff off iTunes I’ve heard on Dark Matter. It’s the only ‘radio’ show worth listening to these days.

Hope Brazil is good.

Take care everyone…………………………………………………………………………..SB

dear dave,
questions for sunday 10.
gerry rafferty’s baker street is a perfect song. what do you think of foo fighters cover of the song? also, you turned down dave greuls request to join “them crooked vultures” as lead guitarist because of your feud with josh homme. you on lead guitar, john paul jones (led zeppelin) on bass and greul on drums. that would have been amazing. do you regret your descision to join?

maxine November 7, 2009 at 5:21 am

Or the song. “sing tiger sing to the spotted giraffe.”

DarlingEvil November 10, 2009 at 7:13 pm

Wow…absolutely loved this 70s emo podcast. The songs brought back memories of listening to AM radio in my parent’s station wagon and going on road trips. Good times. I can’t get the picture of you roller skating to Donna Summer out of my brain now……
